School Choice fairs offer chance to review magnet options

November is officially the big month for school-shopping in HISD, with our School Choice Fair and application period opening on Nov. 1, Magnet Awareness Week Nov. 3-7, and open houses and other activities throughout the month.

Something important happened this week that helps ensure the integrity of those magnet programs. It’s our annual magnet review, which is board policy, and it’s part of the magnet school reform process that we’ve been driving for the past five years.

What this means is that we are holding our magnet schools accountable as never before. They must meet state accountability standards for academics, and they must prove their “magnetism” by attracting students from outside their attendance zone. To be honest, until we began this process, there was little oversight on the quality and integrity of HISD’s magnet programs.

In the spring, we also took unprecedented steps in crafting this year’s HISD budget to make sure magnet schools are equitably funded, creating fairness among programs across the district.

This is all good news for you as you investigate school options. As you attempt to match your student’s needs to our offerings, you can have peace of mind in knowing that your child has quality choices.
