When Davis High School teachers deploy laptops to more than 1,700 students in January as part of PowerUp, teachers will be using the HUB to train students on the proper care and use of the device as well as good digital citizenship.

Davis PowerUp Director Wayne Hughes has set up a “Student Laptop Deployment” course in the HUB which contains a series of lessons and power points for students that will be used when laptops are distributed on Jan. 13 and 14. Each deployment teacher at Davis has also been added as a student in the HUB course and has gone through a dry run of how deployment will work.

“On the deployment days, teachers will log into the HUB and use the online platform for all training of students,” said Hughes. “This will get our students familiar with the HUB and will require them to login during the training.”

Hughes has also loaded a series of videos into the HUB that have been produced by the Davis audio/visual production class. The videos complement the written content and activities in the HUB course to get students familiar with the laptop, web tools, and the HUB itself.

The class has also produced a series of videos to encourage students and parents to sign and return the district’s laptop loan agreement and pay a $25 nonrefundable security deposit.

“The videos play on a large screen in the commons area before and after school, as well as during lunch time,” said Hughes. “Our web technology students have also created flyers for parents and students.”

Davis is one of 14 high schools gearing up for the distribution of more than 18,000 laptops this coming January. The effort is part of the district’s digital transformation effort known as PowerUp, which includes providing every high school student with a laptop for learning at school and at home.
