by HISD Communications

HISD’s online teaching and learning platform, known as the HUB, will be transitioning from its pilot phase to full districtwide implementation during the 2015–2016 school year. The implementation is part of the district’s larger efforts to digitally transform instruction and integrate technology into content development and classroom instructional practices.

Currently, all HISD curriculum is located in the HUB and on June 1, 2015, all online professional development will be migrated to the HUB . At the start of the 2015–2016 school year, all K–12 teachers will have access to various other HUB features including the ability to:

  • Access district curriculum matched to relevant content area and grade level
  • Access and contribute to the HUB library
  • Design standards-based lessons using a customizable planner interface
  • Create and deliver assignments, quizzes, and surveys
  • Access digital resources such as district-approved textbooks, Khan Academy, etc.
  • Collaborate with peers to plan lessons or share ideas and education resources

Before the start of the 2015–2016 school year, all teachers will have various opportunities to learn more about the HUB and its features.

All HISD teachers in grades 6–12, as well as all secondary principals, are invited to attend one of five HISD Transformational Institutes in June and July. In addition to HUB training, attendees will receive professional development on project-based learning, formative assessments for instructional planning, secondary reading remediation, web 2.0 tools, 21st century classroom management, and much more. Teachers will receive a $400 stipend upon successful completion of an entire institute. Click here to learn more.

All HISD elementary schools are currently identifying “HUB Campus Leads” to attend one of two HUB Summer Camp sessions during the weeks of June 1 and June 8. Attendees will train on the HUB’s features and learn how to use the online platform to collaborate with their peers, communicate with their students, and access educational information, resources, and tools. HUB Campus Leads will then lead HUB training for all teachers at their campuses on August 11 and 12, 2015. Contact your school principal for more information.

During the 2014–2015 school year, teachers in the pilot group of schools have used the HUB successfully to engage students, personalize instruction, maximize instructional time, and create group activities and discussions. Check out the videos below to hear about their experience with the HUB.

I am a new teacher (1st grade) and know I will be using the HUB for my lesson plans. I am looking forward to the HUB training on August 11 and 12.
