‘Caught in the Act’ spotlights Lanier MS

Social studies teacher featured in January C.I.A. video

A teacher at Lanier Middle School was “Caught in the Act” of delivering great instruction during a recent visit to her social studies classroom. An HISD video crew, along with Secondary Curriculum and Development Officer Annie Wolfe, surprised Victoria Williams and her seventh grade students in the middle of a Texas history lesson.

Watch the video below to see how Williams’ engages her students in an interactive lesson designed to strengthen their Global Graduate skills. As part of the lesson, students researched and worked together in groups to develop and present skits on the development of events that led to the Texas revolution.

What you need to know about this new districtwide system

HISD’s large scale, districtwide project to enhance and combine critical functions such as HR, Payroll, Procurement, and Finance now has a name. Members of the district’s Change Agent Network were asked to submit suggestions and then vote on a winner. The group overwhelmingly selected OneSource. OneSource will go live in July 2016 and will:

  • Upgrade current SAP functionality in areas of finance and procurement
  • Move HR and payroll processes from PeopleSoft to SAP
  • Provide employees with a self-service platform to manage personal data
  • Provide principals with a self-service platform to organize data and manage business transactions

Fund for Teachers grant deadline is Jan. 28

Fund for Teachers is a Houston-based organization that believes teachers know what kind of professional development they need to help their students succeed.

That’s why every year Fund for Teachers awards grants to educators to enable them to develop skills, knowledge, and confidence that impact student achievement. During the application process, teachers design unique fellowships, and recipients receive grant money to pursue training and knowledge to refine their craft.   read more…

Networking event gives administrative professionals a chance to connect

In a district as large as HISD, sometimes it’s difficult to make professional connections with coworkers who aren’t on the same campus or in the same building.

Houston Rockets hosting several Educator Appreciation Nights

The Houston Rockets are offering select discounted tickets to HISD employees for several upcoming games, including a marquee matchup against the Dallas Mavericks.

To view the upcoming games, go to www.rockets.com/promocode and use the code “educator” to access the ticket site.

Employees can choose from certain games, then search for seats. All tickets are subject to availability and price changes.

Friday is Houston Texans Spirit Day in HISD

texans_spirit_dayThe entire city is rallying around the Houston Texans as they continue their inspiring run in the NFL playoffs. In HISD, we want to show our support for a team that has brought a renewed sense of pride to our community, and for the many Texans players and staff who regularly give their time and resources to Houston schools.

In recognition of the Houston Texans’ contributions to HISD students in particular, all HISD central office employees are encouraged to show support for the team by wearing Texans team attire and jeans on “Houston Texans Spirit Day,” which will be this Friday, January 8, 2016, in HISD.
