Astros, Bank of Texas help make over Sinclair ES library

Sinclair Elementary has big dreams for its library, and they’re getting closer to making them come true thanks to generous donations from the Houston Astros and Bank of Texas.

Sinclair’s library was originally stocked with second-hand furniture from other schools, and more than 40 years later students are using that same furniture. The school has launched a “Love Our Library” campaign to replace shelving, computer desks, tables, chairs, and more.

“I think access for students to the books is the key point of the new design,” Principal Abigail Taylor told ABC 13. “We’ll be able to have some lower shelving for the picture books for our pre-K and kinder students so they will be able to walk up and actually see the titles.”

New furniture isn’t cheap. It’s going to cost around $32,000 to make all the changes on their wish list. The Houston Astros and Bank of Texas stepped in to jumpstart the fund by donating $5,000.

Bank of Texas is also helping update the library’s book collection through its partnership with First Book.

“Being a strong reader makes you better in every single subject area,” Taylor said. “The first thing that you need to practice and sharpen your skills as a reader is access to books.”
