The Houston Independent School District Homeless Education Office will provide free dresses, tuxedo and shoe rentals, and accessories to hundreds of homeless and at-risk high school seniors planning to go to prom.
The event, Project Prom, will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center (4400 W. 18th Street). The initiative was created this year as part of Project S.A.F.E. (Student Assistance and Family Empowerment) under the homeless education office. Project Prom has received support from the Bee Busy Wellness Center, Al’s Formal Wear, and Majestic Tuxedo.
The event will include motivational speakers and health services, including meningitis shots which are required for all incoming Texas college students.
The HISD Homeless Education Office is a grant-funded program that currently serves approximately 6,000 homeless students throughout the district.
