It’s not uncommon for students to lose a little momentum during the lazy days of summer. Luckily, parents and community members can help prevent the “summer slide” by volunteering for the Read Houston Read program this summer break.
HISD’s Elementary Curriculum and Development literacy team is excited to announce that many Read Houston Read schools will offer the program to volunteers and students during summer school.
This will enhance the current summer school program and add additional intervention for students who need it most.
The Rotary Clubs of Houston have also graciously agreed to adopt five of the summer Read Houston Read schools as an introduction to the Read Houston Read program in an effort to recruit more members to volunteer and have a stronger presence within our community during the 2016–2017 school year.
The districtwide mentoring effort, which enhances the current summer school program and remains a key component of HISD’s Literacy By 3 initiative, will be available throughout the summer at the following schools:
Lewis, Burnet, Tijerina, Thompson, Highland Heights, R. Martinez, Law, Hobby, Cook, Piney Point, Grissom, and Blackshear.
Volunteers who are already mentors and have completed a background check may immediately sign up for a session at a participating school.
For those who have not previously had a background check, visit the Read Houston Read website for more information and links to registration.
