Superintendent Richard A. Carranza wants to hear from the community on the last stop of his Listen & Learn Tour – and you don’t even have to leave your house to join in the discussion.
Carranza will take community questions and comments in a virtual town hall meeting on Nov. 14. The discussion will be streamed live on HoustonISD.org, Facebook.com/HoustonISD, and on HISD-TV (Comcast 18 and Uverse 99).
There will be two opportunities to join in the discussion: from 6-7 p.m. for English-speaking community members, and from 7:30-8:30 p.m. for Spanish-speaking community members.
The community can submit questions ahead of time by emailing AskTheSupe@HoustonISD.org, posting a Tweet with the hashtag #AskTheSupe, or posting a question at Facebook.com/HoustonISD. The community can also submit questions during the live event.
Carranza has held more than two dozen town hall meetings over the past few weeks as a way to introduce himself to the community, solicit input from stakeholders about the district’s future, and learn about key issues across HISD.
Some of the topics of discussion have included: equity and making sure every student has the opportunities available to them to succeed, serving the whole child with extracurricular activities, engaging outside entities to work with HISD to provide support services for students and families, and the issue of recapture and how the school funding structure is affecting the district.
The district faces a $162 million payment to the state in local property tax dollars, and voters will be given the option of authorizing the payment during the Nov. 8 election.
