Wanda Adams, HISD Board of Education President and District IX Trustee, will host a parent summit to provide Hispanic families with access to information and resources to prepare them to support their kids’ academic achievement.
The free event will take place on Saturday, April 8 at Grissom Elementary School (4900 Simsbrook, Houston 77045) with registration starting at 7:30 a.m. Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in a parent panel and various workshops aimed to help parents and caregivers influence their children’s education. Parents will also be able to have their children screened for dyslexia, receive assistance completing FAFSA/TAFSA applications, learn about selecting the best schools for their kids, and much more.
“My goal is for all of our parents to be empowered with the right tools and information that will assist their decision-making process when it comes to their kids’ education,” Trustee Adams said. “We want to remove any potential barriers, including language, to facilitate such access,” she added.
The event will be conducted in Spanish with English translation available and will feature many HISD wrap-around services, community partners and organizations to provide a variety of resources for parents and families. Emmy award-winning and senior Univision 45 news anchor Raúl Peimbert will deliver the keynote speech, while Janel García Univision 45 news reporter will serve as moderator of the parent panel.
Attendees are encouraged to preregister online at www.HoustonISD.org/FACE or by calling HISD Family and Community Engagement Department at 713-556-7290. Free breakfast, lunch, onsite childcare and dyslexia screening is available with preregistration.
