Harris Health Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital celebrated National Hospital Week (May 12-18) with the unveiling of their inaugural Community Visual Art Exhibition Gallery collection. Entitled “LBJ Exposed,” the artwork is a collection of photographs taken by HISD student artists that depict the zeitgeist of the community surrounding LBJ and the city of Houston.
The 27 photographs were selected by LBJ from the Museum of Fine Arts Houston’s Eye on Houston contest. The exhibited photographs were taken by students from Bellaire High School, Carnegie Vanguard High School, DeBakey High School for Health Professionals, Eastwood Academy High School, Furr High School, and Yates High School.
HISD was approached by LBJ Internal Communications Manager, Ian Todd, to collaborate on a plan for an evergreen display in the hospital’s new atrium. LBJ will host work by HISD students permanently, with new pieces rotating in twice a year, in an attempt to connect with the community they serve by incorporating local artwork into their recent renovation.
“Having my work exhibited at the LBJ Hospital for people to see and admire is an incredible and rewarding experience as an artist,” said Jorge Fuentes, a senior at DeBakey. “It validates one’s artistic vision and creativity.”
HISD is passionate about championing its young artists, and events like “LBJ Exposed” are beneficial for helping students develop connections and associations within their community. Future exhibitions will feature artwork from campuses within the surrounding Kashmere Gardens community and other campuses across the District.
“Several of my students’ photographs were hand-selected to capture the essence of the LBJ Hospital community,” said Neda Khan, art teacher at DeBakey. “I’m incredibly grateful for this experience with my students showcasing their art in the hospital gallery, highlighting how art and science come together to build a well-rounded society.”
“LBJ Exposed” can be viewed in the new Community Visual Art Exhibition Gallery at Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital located at 5656 Kelley Street. Student works will be on display indefinitely.
