Volunteers will be at all HISD high schools from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Houston FAFSA Day, to help students and their parents apply for a piece of the $150 billion available in federal financial aid for college.
Parents and students* should bring the following to complete the FAFSA:
• Social Security number
• Driver’s license number
• Most recent federal tax return
• Most recent W-2 or year-end pay stub
• Untaxed income records
• Bank statements
• Business and investment records
• Alien registration card if not a U.S. citizen
*students who were born before Jan. 1, 1992, do not need to bring parental information
Many schools also held events throughout the day to encourage students to apply for FAFSA. Davis High School’s GO Center opened at 8 a.m. to help seniors and K-11 students, who can get started early with the FAFSA4caster, which will help them figure out how to pay for college.

These workshops will not adequately serve the needs of our students in the district. Too few. Contrast that with Spring Branch having 28 workshops on 18 different days and at different times of the day so that parents will be able to consult without having to take time off from work. Also, it is early for parents to have their income tax information ready. If HISD had a knowledgeable person in charge of Guidance and Counseling as do other area districts, our students could have the opportunities that those in other districts have resources for.. Our students should be advised to look at the information posted on the Spring Branch website for guidance. Their deans do not have the knowledge or time to provide it. And one counselor cannot serve as many as 2300 students.
