HISD students kicked off Go Texan Day and Houston’s rodeo season by meeting some real cowboys and their horses. The trail ride tradition was brought to life for the students as Horseshoes from the Heart drove their wagons, along with wagons from the Los Vaqueros Rio Grande Trail Ride Association, the Bellaire FFA and the Alabama Coushatta Dance Troupe, past seven southwest Houston schools.

In its 20th year, Horseshoes from the Heart president and founder Kent Crawford said the trail ride passes by the schools to bring a little Texas history to the youngsters. Special needs students get to ride in the wagons and at the end get a certificate as an official Texas Trail Rider.

Students from Frost Elementary and Principal David Terrell also decked out in their western duds for Go Texan Day.
The rodeo parade moseys through downtown at 10 a.m. Feb. 28, and the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo runs from March 3-22.
