The school’s engineering academy, which serves students in grades 6–8, offers students three pathways related to engineering: science, mathematics, and technology. Key components of the program include offshore technologies, green energy, geosciences, underwater robotics, and environmental engineering.
The campus also offers students many opportunities to participate in field experiences. Through the Galveston Bay Foundation’s Hip to Habitat program, for instance, students actually help restore Galveston Bay’s coastal and prairie habitats. The Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum and Education Center, meanwhile, provides them with a taste of the petroleum industry, and the underwater robotics curriculum gives students a better understanding of the role of remotely operated vehicles in the offshore energy industry.
“M.C. Williams scholars benefit from a top-notch STEM program that engages them in experiences related to engineering, robotics, environmental science, project-based learning and technology integration in all classrooms,” said Principal Courtney Busby. “We are building critical thinkers who are ready for high school and beyond.”
M.C. Williams is also one of only six schools in HISD to receive support for its programs through a $12-million Magnet School Assistance Program (MSAP) grant awarded in 2013.
HISD will be holding its annual School Choice Fair on Saturday, April 25, for parents and students who have not yet decided on a school for the coming academic year. M.C. Williams is one of several schools that still has space available in its magnet program. For more information about M.C. Williams or other magnet campuses, please visit the School Choice website.
