Students thank veterans for their service to America

Students at Barrick Elementary School were treated to a parade featuring the likenesses of famous American authors, activists, and personalities during their annual Veterans’ Day ceremony on Nov. 10, 2015.

The school, like many across the district, held a special program to honor citizens who gave of themselves by serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Sam Houston Math, Science and Technology Center marching band and Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) also performed, and local veterans, including some school staff members, joined the parade.

“The veterans appreciate this,” said parade participant George Black, who served in the Marines for 20 years. “The only thing I can say is I hope they continue doing this. The kids just love doing it.”

The Veterans’ Day event is in its third year at Barrick, and Principal Yolanda Garrido hopes to continue the tradition.

“We hope to honor our veterans and show our American pride through our parade.” said Garrido. “And I think every day is a day to thank a veteran.”

Other HISD schools are holding ceremonies as well, including:

• Lovett ES, which is honoring veterans with a musical journey through our nation’s history. The Lovett band, chorus, hand bells, and orchestra will perform, along with Bellaire HS JROTC.

• Durham ES, which is honoring 15–20 veterans as honored guests, and students have prepared special songs, poems, readings, and art work. The Black Middle School JROTC will post the colors and present a drill routine.
