In an effort to help support the community of Flint, Michigan, and help during its water crisis, the staff and students of Hines-Caldwell Elementary School are hosting a Bottled Water Drive on Saturday, Jan. 30 from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

After learning about the water issues occurring in Flint, Hines-Caldwell Principal Torrye Hooper said a few teachers decided they wanted to help as much as possible from Houston.

“Two of our staff members are from Flint, and starting from a general conversation, they decided to start a bottled water drive on behalf of the citizens and have our students involved,” Hooper said.

The city recently has made national news after its water was discovered to be contaminated with high levels of lead, affecting a large number of the population with lead poisoning and other related health issues.

At Hines-Caldwell, a fourth-grade team has been assembled to volunteer for the drive by handing out fliers and spreading the word across the district.

“Students will help out by publicizing the event to parents and the community in an effort to bridge that relationship between us and the community,” Hooper said. “We are currently working with local community centers and the Flint School District to deliver our donations, and we want to make sure it specifically reaches out to the community in Flint.”
