Students at Longfellow Elementary School on Friday announced that action figures and slime kits are two of the hottest toys this holiday season after polling their classmates for their annual top toy survey.
For the ninth consecutive year, a group of fifth-graders at the school survey their classmates to determine what gifts kids would like to receive for the holidays. In an mid-morning press conference, 12 students announced the top five toys for boys and girls. The goal of the survey is to help give parents and relatives an idea of what to buy before they do their holiday shopping.
“Today we are showing some different toys that your child might want,” said fifth-grader Kaylyn Newcomb. “We want to give you a little bit of inspiration so you don’t have to draw things out and ask them what they want.”
The students worked in teams for more than two months to survey classmates. According to the students, they spent a week compiling all their findings.
“We are really proud of the students. They were really logical about it this year,” said program organizer and fourth-grade teacher Jennifer Howell. “They took tablets out to survey the kids, tabulated all of it and then put it into the powerpoint.”
Tablets and phones were popular among second-grade girls, which surprised many of the surveyors.
“I was surprised the girls picked tablets over Hatchimals because they’re pretty popular right now,” one student said during the press conference. “If I was a second-grade girl, I would’ve picked a Hatchimal over a tablet.
In addition to presenting their findings, the students showcased samples of the top toys, which also included Legos, Squishies and Nerf Guns.
The toys are given to the school by the neighborhood Target store on Main Street. After the event, the fifth-graders who led the survey could choose a toy for themselves. The remaining toys are later given to needy Longfellow students.
