HISD middle and high school students from across the district will gather to show off their reading comprehension skills next week during the annual Name that Book competition.
Coordinated by the HISD Department of Library Services, the contest serves to acquaint HISD students with classic literature, as well as contemporary award-winning books, representing a variety of genres.
To prepare, students are challenged to read 30 or more age-appropriate books from an approved list over a period of several months, then compete on teams to see who can correctly identify the largest number of titles, based on quotes read aloud. Teams with the highest number of correct titles are deemed the winners—but the truth is that every child benefits by participating.
The 2019 finals have been underway since early this month. The team from Barbara Bush ES took home the title for the elementary school contest. The competition will conclude Friday, March 29 at Hattie Mae White (4400 W. 18th St, 77092) with the middle school and high school contests. The middle school finals will be held from 9 a.m. to Noon. The high school finals will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. You can watch the finals live on Facebook at Facebook.com/HoustonISD.
