Christmas arrived early for nearly three hundred kindergarten through third grade students at Benbrook Elementary School. On Saturday, December 15, the students were awarded free bicycles and helmets from the group Elves and More for achieving their reading goals for the semester.
HISD Board of Education Trustee Anna Eastman who attended the event praised the students for their work. Principal Dana Darden said she truly appreciated the generosity and said the bicycles were another reminder for students about the importance of hard work. “All of the students who received the bicycles and helmets worked extremely hard this semester to achieve their reading goals,” said Darden. “I’m very pleased Elves and More helped us reward them.”
The City of Houston-Pedestrian department donated two bicycle racks for Benbrook Elementary. As volunteers with the non-profit organization Tour De Hood taught the students the proper way to ride their new bicycles, the Rainforest Café’s mascot Cha!Cha! helped get everyone in the holiday spirit.
This year Elves and More will donate 10,000 bicycles to students in the Houston area.
