Yates students will produce hour-long program every other Saturday
Students from the Yates Magnet School of Communications will launch a regular one-hour radio program on KCOH 1230 AM this Saturday, April 20.
The program will air on alternating Saturdays from 10 to 11 a.m.
The show was made possible through a partnership between HISD and the historic radio station that broadcasts citywide from Houston’s Third Ward.
“This is an excellent opportunity for our students,” said Yates Principal Marla McNeal-Sheppard. “They will be able to apply everything they have been taught in the classroom. We are excited.”
The show’s format will feature teen topics, current events, education trends, sports, and entertainment news.
In addition to the student program, HISD and KCOH will team up to produce a 30-minute talk program to air on alternating Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to noon. The program, hosted by Michael Harris, will feature guests from HISD discussing district news and issues. The first program airs Wednesday, April 17 and features Board of Education Trustee Paula Harris and Dave Wheat, HISD’s assistant superintendent for school choice. They will be discussing the newly created Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan and the Energy Institute High School, which will be represented at the upcoming HISD School Choice Fair on April 27 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center (4400 W. 18th Street).
