HISD to Offer One-Stop Shop for all Magnet Programs

Representatives for more than 100 magnet programs will be available on Saturday

With more than 100 Magnet programs available in the Houston Independent School District, parents across the city have many choices when it comes to selecting the best school to meet the needs of their children.  Parents and students will have an opportunity to meet with representatives from all 113 magnet programs during the annual Magnet Open House on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center (4400 W. 18th St, 77092).  Click here for more information about HISD school choice options, including neighborhood schools.

“At HISD, we offer our students broad opportunities to meet their needs, challenge their thinking and develop their skills and talents,” said HISD Assistant Superintendent for School Choice Dave Wheat.  “Most importantly, these programs encourage students to stay in school and prepare them to be college-ready.”

The representatives at the Magnet Open House will assist parents in making the best school choice for their children and help them submit their applications that same day.

“Our Magnet programs have been so successful that many reach full capacity quickly, so it’s important that parents submit their applications in accordance with published timelines to ensure their children get into their program or school of choice,” Wheat said.  “The representatives will be there to assist them with every step of the application.”

Some of the schools to be showcased at the Magnet Open House include Elrod Elementary and Hartman Middle School which offer a medical science magnet program.  Parents can also learn more about the Mandarin Chinese Language Immersion Magnet Schoolavailable for students in Pre-Kinder through second grade.  Representatives from the various STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) magnet schools such as Ross, Berry and Whidby elementary schools; Clifton and M.C. Williams middle schools and Chavez and Jones high schools, among others, will also be on site.

These magnet programs and schools are open to all children, including those who live outside HISD.
