The Houston Independent School District was named one of the top 25 healthiest employers in Houston on March 26 at a luncheon hosted by the Houston Business Journal. HISD ranked fourth in the large employer category. The district also had the biggest improvement with a score of 77.498 — up 19.9 points from last year. Forty-four companies scored 50 points or higher to make HBJ’s 2013 Healthiest Employers list, compared to 26 companies last year.

“It was a great honor to receive this recognition for HISD and for our many employees who are actively engaged in making themselves and their students healthier,” said HISD Benefits General Manager Brad Bailey.

HISD has made great strides in providing health and wellness benefits to its employees. In 2010, the district opened the first of two HISD Employee Health & Wellness Centers, one at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center and another at Attucks Middle School. The clinics are now available at no cost to all employees participating in one of the HISD medical plans, as well as covered dependents age 5 and older.
