It’s National School Lunch Week, and HISD is celebrating by highlighting locally produced products.
HISD has teamed up with the Texas Department of Agriculture to serve more homegrown fruits and vegetables. These partnerships are designed to promote healthy eating and provide an economic boost to local family farms. On Fri., Oct. 18, all oranges served in cafeterias throughout the district will be from local growers. The bread and milk products served throughout the year, however, are always local.
If you would like to help determine what is on the menu for future HISD school breakfasts and lunches, come to a Nutrition Innovation Food Show from 4 to 7 p.m. Thurs., Oct. 24, at the Sheraton Houston Brookhollow Hotel, 3000 North Loop West. More than 40 vendors will be on hand with samples for students and their families to try. Participants will be asked to fill out an evaluation form, and their feedback will be used to design menus for the 2014–2015 school year.
