Magnet notifications are in. What’s next?

As student notifications hit inboxes and mailboxes, parents began to wonder what’s next. When a student is accepted to a school of his or her choice, parents must notify the school by April 11 in order to keep that spot for the 2014-2015 year. If a school agreement was included with the notification, parents must follow all the instructions and complete the acceptance process for the school of choice.

About waitlists

Once a school is confirmed, all other schools for which the student applied and was accepted will open the spot to others on the waitlist. If a student accepts admission into a magnet school, they will not lose their place on the waitlist for other schools. However, upon accepting a school, they will automatically decline any other school that granted them acceptance.

Because of fluctuating waitlists, parents are encouraged to frequently check their School Choice online dashboard for an updated number. If you are unsure about your place on a waitlist, first check the online School Choice online dashboard at http://houstonisdschoolchoiceapplication.com/ If you believe your waitlist number is incorrect, contact the School Choice hotline at 713-556-6947or via email at magnetonlineapplicationhelp@houstonisd.org.

Magnet and vanguard availability

If you’re applying to a magnet or vanguard program for the first time, please be aware that you’ll be considered in order after waitlists are cleared and those who applied after the Dec. 20, 2013, deadline are considered. Following that deadline for the first round of lottery, HISD’s school choice office continued to accept applications for all magnet and vanguard programs. The applications submitted after the Dec. 20 deadline will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Students who apply to programs with openings will be accepted if qualifications are met, after waitlists are met, and in order of application.

Once students who applied by Dec. 20 and participated in the lottery accept or decline their offers, a new document listing schools with openings will be posted on the HISD School Choice Website.

What can we do if we have one child accepted to a magnet and another is also entering Middle school but in different grades. I applied for the same school but they only accepted one and the other is not accept. The school refuses to accept any regular transfer and they flat out tell me that the only transfer they accept are magnet. I explained that my child will not be taking away a magnet spot but a regular spot. I was told that magnet student are in different classes then the regular students. Why could they not accept a transfer so that I may have them both in one same school. Please help me I need help with me problem before they start the new school year 2014-2015

Thank you and hope to here from you soon.

    Sincerely
    Yvonne
