Lanier Middle School competed in the Texas UIL Region 23 contest over the weekend and came away with two big awards – sweepstakes for both the varsity and non-varsity bands.
“This particular contest is not about winning but about doing everything you are supposed to do,” Lanier band director Ali Jackson said.
The 43-member non-varsity group and the 59-member varsity group did everything right. Jackson said receiving the sweepstakes award is similar to getting a 100 on a test.
Lanier’s band program has had a very successful year. The school’s polka band won third place in the state. The varsity band won third black in the Renaissance Festival’s early music contest. The symphony orchestra, which is comprised of its top orchestra and members from the varsity band, performed at the district’s State of the Schools luncheon.
