About 6,800 HISD third-grade students will get free backpacks full of supplies, thanks to the NCAA.

“Each student will get a notebook, pencils, pens, crayons, rulers, and other school supplies,” said Doug Hall, president of the Houston organizing committee for the 2016 NCAA Final Four.

The backpacks will be distributed to 68 schools, which will represent the 68 starting schools in the NCAA tournament.

This won’t be the only thing the NCAA does with HISD before the Final Four in March 2016.

“The Final Four is really a year-long celebration of community,” Hall said. “Since kids are going back to school, and basketball season starts in October, we hope to be doing lots of community improvements and lots of partnerships with HISD.”
