Two HISD educators, Catherine Smith and Madelyn Traylor, were recently honored as “Houston’s Hometown Champion” after winning the most votes in a national social-media contest sponsored by Radio One/News One.

The contest is held annually in each of the company’s major markets, and Smith and Traylor were recognized as the joint Houston winner this year for their “extreme work in the community” and for their efforts to improve the lives of others.

Smith, a teacher at Austin High School, and Traylor, who serves as both teacher and magnet coordinator at Blackshear Elementary School, are also ministers. They cofounded Power4Life, a faith-based nonprofit organization, to empower families living in the historic Third and Fifth Ward areas with knowledge, education, and other types of support.

The duo was formally recognized during the Annual NAACP Image Awards, which took place in Los Angeles, Calif., on Feb. 6, 2016.

Both my niece, Minister Catherine Smith and Minister Madelyn Traylor work very hard and effortlessly to help families in these communities. They not only give of their time, but they give clothing, furniture, food and etc. They also have partners within Power 4 Life Ministries that give as well. But these two Ministers are AWESOME Stewards of GOD. They will give their last in order to help families/people in need!
Well done Minister Catherine Smith and Minister Traylor, well done!
