More than 100 of HISD’s top athletes made commitments to colleges on Wednesday as part of a National Signing Day ceremony at Forest Brook Middle School.

Among the signees were Bellaire High School triplets Maxwell, Megan, and Maya Evans. Brother Maxwell is headed to Vanderbilt University for basketball, while his two sisters will attend Tennessee State University to play volleyball.

“We picked Tennessee State because it’s only five minutes from Vanderbilt, and when we visited the campus, it felt like home,” Megan Evans said. “We knew it was the right school for us.”

“Our parents don’t have to pay for college, which was a big thing for us ever since we were little,” added sister Maya. “So I’m very excited about continuing to play the sport we love and continuing our education.”

Sharpstown’s Dallas Blacklock signed on to West Point for football, while Lamar QB Owen Holt is heading to Harvard to pursue his studies and play football.

“Today is a really big day. I’m happy for all the athletes here, happy for Lamar, and happy for HISD,” Holt said. “In terms of Ivy League football, Harvard is one of the best. Harvard academics are some of the best, but it’s the football program that put it over the rest for me. I’m excited to start a new chapter of my life. I’m a little nervous, but that’s to be expected.”

HISD Board of Education President Wanda Adams and Trustees Diana Dávila, Jolanda Jones, and Rhonda Skillern-Jones were on hand to support the student athletes and their families, as was HISD Athletics Director Marmion Dambrino.

Traditionally, National Signing Day has been reserved for senior high school football players, but HISD includes both female and male athletes from all sports to showcase the district’s athletic talent. Additional athletic commitments are expected after Signing Day.
