Staff and community members teaming up to help victims of the storm

HISD staff members and volunteers from across the city are helping out with Hurricane Harvey relief by collecting much-needed items for the students and families affected by the storm.

HISD’s Delmar Fieldhouse has been become a makeshift donation center for school uniforms and supplies, toiletries, socks, underwear, and 5,000 pairs of shoes recently donated by Mythiquer Pickett, the founder of We See Abilities.

Volunteers from the nonprofit organization Samaritan’s Feet and several former professional basketball players, including Harvey Catchings, Howard Smith, and Mel Hughlett joined HISD staff members from Cornelius Elementary on Wednesday, Sept. 6 to unload and unpack the anti-microbial shoes, which were provided by World Shoe. The shoes, which are available in children and adult sizes, will be distributed to students and parents affected by Harvey.

Staff from Cornelius aren’t the only members of Team HISD who have been helping out to sort and collect donations at Delmar. Teachers from Park Place and Mitchell elementary schools, Woodson PK-8, and Patrick Henry and Clifton middle schools has been assisting the district’s Family and Community Empowerment Department with the collection, sorting, and distribution of donations.

Individuals and organizations who want to help the district’s students and families recover from the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey can bring donations to Delmar Fieldhouse, 2020 Mangum Road, Houston, Texas 77092, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The last day donations will be accepted will be Friday, Sept. 29. People wanting to drop off donations should enter the complex on Mangum Street. Signs will be posted.

In addition, two other locations are accepting donations until Friday, September 8.

  • Donations will be accepted until Sept. 8 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The district is accepting donations of the following new, unused items:

Undergarments
Socks
Uniforms
Deodorant
Hand sanitizer
Pillows
Blankets
Shoes
Toothbrushes, toothpaste
Other hygiene items
Professional dress for impacted staff

The HISD Foundation is also accepting donations to help families recover, and 100% of funds raised will go directly to helping HISD students and families. Click here to make a donation, and please specify “Harvey” as the purpose for your donation.
