The Sterling McCall VIP Services Teacher of the Month program ended with a special surprise when Interim Superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan awarded May’s winner, Julisa Lucio at Cornelius Elementary on Tuesday.

Known across the district for her teaching style, the fifth-grade teacher takes into account the learning needs specific to each of her students when planning and executing lessons. Lucio’s ability to draw students into the lessons and bring literature to life has led to her popularity across the district.

“Everything that she pours into the classroom encompasses love and authenticity,” said Principal Angel Wilson.  

On any day, one might witness Lucio’s 90-plus students engage in literature circles, collaborative learning groups and high-quality products based on students’ individual levels.

“I enjoy being able to walk in the classroom knowing that what I do helps shape my students’ future,” Lucio said. “It’s rewarding to know that I’m making a difference in their lives.”

Lucio also serves a mentor and model teacher for her colleagues and students. Her teaching practices have been featured in an exemplary instructional video by HISD’s Professional Development Department to provide enrichment practicums for other teachers in the district.

“I think it’s important to make sure our teachers are appreciated for their hard work.” Wilson added. “Lucio takes great pride in her work and I couldn’t be happier to honor her today.”

Lucio’s morning commute will change as she wraps up the 2017-2018 school year. For the next month, she’ll enjoy a fully loaded 2018 Ford Edge, courtesy of Sterling McCall Ford.

As part of the Teacher of the Month program, HISD Interim Superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan surprised a teacher along with a rep from Sterling McCall VIP Services from November to May. Each month, the winning teacher was presented with an award, a gift basket of promotional items, a $150 gift card, and a luxury loaner vehicle.

Each of the seven HISD Area Superintendents were responsible for selecting a teacher from their region to be honored.
