Cars lined the front of Navarro Middle School on Saturday, as Navarro hosted a “Coat Distribution Day” that also included turkey giveaways, free COVID-19 vaccinations, and voter registration. Navarro had 500 coats available to donate.
More than 120 students had pre-registered, and members of the community came out early in the morning to pick up their coats and turkeys.
“This is a perfect way to start the Thanksgiving holiday, and with winter coming, we want to make sure that our students get the right coats for the winter and have food for a Thanksgiving meal,” said Steven Deutsch, Wraparound Services resource specialist at Navarro.
The event was organized by HISD Wraparound Services and featured help from the Navarro East End Community Council, LULAC, and Central City Industrial Park, which helped provide the turkeys. Kids Helping Kids donated the jackets for the students, and the vaccines were provided by the City of Houston and the Texas Division of Emergency Management.
