Houston Independent School District JROTC cadets attended the annual HISD Cadet Seminar to gear up for the 2023-2024 school year and competition season.
The three-day event at Wisdom High School welcomed hundreds of students from high schools across the district.
“All the schools come out, and we practice, teach new skills, and trade our secrets for cadets to take back to their schools to implement throughout the year in staff training and all drill training to run their JROTC battalion,” said Major Micah Ray, Sam Houston MSTC ROTC Instructor.
Each day of the seminar presented a new learning opportunity for cadets to train and prepare for the upcoming drill season.
“I’m learning a lot of new things here,” said Sam Houston MSTC 11th grader Alessandra Rodriguez. “I was in inspection for drill, and I learned the boundaries and the field. Now I’m in regulation, and I’m asking questions to understand my role as commander and how the score sheet is judged.”
Among a host of interactive activities and trainings, the seminar also provided cadets a chance to bond with their peers and instructors from neighboring districts.
“We’re the host, but we partner with others because their schools can value the training as well,” said Ray.
The annual summer event is fully sponsored by U.S. Army JROTC and U.S. Army Cadet Command and is open to students interested in becoming a JROTC cadet at their campus.
