Houston readies for new school year with events, giveaways

With the new school year just weeks away, organizations citywide are rallying to provide backpacks, school supplies, haircuts, immunizations, and food to families in need.

Houston Food Bank Backpack Buddy Program

What: The Houston Food Bank Backpack Buddy Program provides nutritious food for school kids to take home over the weekend while they won’t have access to school-provided meals.
When: Every Friday throughout the school year.

Back to School Bash & Community Resource Fair

What: Families and community members are invited to take advantage of Harris County programs and resources, health testing and vaccinations, haircuts, hygiene, and school supplies, all free of charge.
When: Aug. 19, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Where: Sam Houston Math, Science and Technology Center (9400 Irvington Blvd., 77076)

Lawson Academy Backpack Giveaway

What: Parents of 3- and 4-year-olds, register today to receive a FREE backpack and supplies for your pre-school kiddos. Giveaway items available while supplies last.

Health is Wealth Community Fair

What: The Houston Health Department and community partners are offering free childhood vaccines, blood pressure checks, and physicals on-site, along with access to additional community resources.
