‘Significant’ number of schools looking for increases
HISD’s Board of Education held a workshop Thursday on the status of fine arts education in the district and heard that in a survey, a “significant number” of schools said they would like to implement greater access to arts education immediately.
Among the areas examined in the presentation by Chief Academic Officer Dan Gohl were the effects of arts participation on academic performance and behavior, arts access, and community partnerships.
This is a tragic misrepresntation of the Districts attitude towards the arts. Furr High School was a Fine arts Magnet school until this year when it was forced to change to a STEM school with little or no warning to the students that attend Furr as a Magnet School for the Arts. Now they are stuck taking classes that are of no interest to them.
