Rodriguez Elementary School students, along with the Gulfton-area community, now have a new soccer field, thanks to the generosity and fundraising efforts of the Dreambuilders Foundation and United Healthcare. The two groups joined forces with Houston Texans player Chris Myers for a campus celebration on Nov. 11.

Due to the weather, the rededication ceremony was conducted indoors, but despite the change in plans, Myers was able to create an indoor soccer challenge for the kids and talk to them about the importance of good health habits and being physically fit.

“It’s pretty amazing to be able to come out here and see the difference we are able to make in the lives of all the kids,” said Myers. “To be able to see the difference that certain fundraising makes out here, and come out here and it’s tangible, it feels really good.”

The Dreambuilders Foundation and United Healthcare sponsored the soccer field renovation as a part of their “Get in the Game” health and fitness initiative. The program encourages students to make healthy choices and to be physically active at least 30 minutes a day.

The new soccer field will help reignite a passion for sports in Rodriguez’s Pre-K through fifth-grade students by providing them with a great setting for physical education, recess, after-school and field-day activities. The field will also be available to Gulfton-area families and soccer teams for recreation and exercise.
