HISD students to compete at STEM Symposium and Education Rainbow Challenge Nov. 15

As part of HISD’s efforts to strengthen students’ skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), more than 1,500 students are expected to explore future career options in those areas at two weekend events — the HISD STEM Symposium and the Education Rainbow Challenge.

HISD’s STEM Symposium will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 15, at Chávez High School (8501 Howard Dr. 77017). Thirty education and STEM industry professionals, including former astronaut Dr. Bonnie Dunbar and HISD Board of Education member Manuel Rodriguez, will speak about the importance of a STEM education and encourage students to take STEM classes to prepare to enter a highly technical work force. The event is sponsored by a partnership between Gathering of Eagles, Inc. and the Houston Military Affairs Committee.

The Education Rainbow Challenge will give students the opportunity to compete in two mathematics challenges and participate in exciting science experiments. Parents will be provided with information on helping their children to improve their math and science skills. On-grade-level students from grades 3–5 are expected to attend the event on Saturday, Nov. 15, at Reagan High School (413 East 13th St., 77008), from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
