Two years ago, Houston voters approved a $1.89 billion bond to replace or repair 40 HISD campuses, including 29 high schools. Now, taxpayers are starting to see the fruits of that decision, as HISD officials and community leaders have broken ground on four brand new campuses over the past two weeks, and recognized the first project from the 2012 bond to “go vertical.”
The beam-signing ceremony took place at Worthing High School on Dec. 11, while ground-breaking ceremonies were held for the Mandarin Chinese Language Immersion Magnet School on Dec. 8, the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) on Dec. 14, DeBakey High School for Health Professions on Dec. 15, and Milby High School on Dec. 18.
The DeBakey and HSPVA events were particularly exciting, as their new facilities will be located in the heart of the Texas Medical Center and the downtown Theater District, respectively, providing unparalleled opportunities for future students in those fields of study.
