Jordan High School’s 18th annual, citywide hair-styling competition took place on Jan. 12, 2015, and while all eyes were rightfully directed toward the stage, the focus of this year’s event was service.
Cosmetology teacher Francine Lewis coordinated a partnership between the school and the Fifth Ward’s Hester House to build stronger connections and bridge the generation gap between young people and senior citizens. Two Hester House seniors, Rosa Valley and Betty Williams, even appeared on stage at the event after receiving complete makeovers from students Jasmine Ball and Tamiela Phylow.
“This partnership allowed seniors to impart their wisdom and career advice to the young people, while students lifted seniors’ spirits by glamming up their appearance with trendy hairstyles,” said Lewis. “The students really appreciate these type of experiences, as it gives them a peek at what it might be like to serve and please many clients at once in a salon. It has been phenomenally successful.”
