The Jack Yates Chapter of the Student Television Network produced their first short narrative student film, “Grown,” under the direction of Yates High School instructor Omar Peters on Friday, March 6, 2015.

It was a collaboration between the Yates School of Communications, the Art Institute of Houston, and local film training company MPAC (Mack Performing Arts Collective), which is owned by actress Jalene Mack, who coached the student actors on camera presence.

Narrative film production is a new direction for the School of Communications that teaches students the STEM side of digital filmmaking. All six communications pathways participated: Electrical, TV & Film, Commercial Photography, Graphic Design, Printing Tech, and Journalism.

During the next few years, the short films will evolve into longer formats, including feature length films. Junior and senior video students will be able to edit their own versions using Final Cut 7, Final Cut X, or Adobe Premiere CS6.

A small screening of “Grown” will take place in the next few weeks.
