Houston Independent School District students will not have to attend school on Friday thanks to a waiver granted by the Texas Education Agency.

HISD schools and district offices were closed today — Tuesday, May 26 — due to overnight storms that resulted in potentially dangerous driving conditions because of heavy flooding throughout the city.

Following state law, which requires districts to make up missed instructional days, HISD originally announced that students would have to make up the day on Friday — the day after the scheduled last day of school. However, HISD has since learned that the Texas Education Agency has granted a waiver for both HISD and other districts affected by the storm.

Schools and offices are expected to re-open at their regularly scheduled times on Wednesday, May 27. The last day of school for students is Thursday, May 28, as originally outlined in the calendar. The last day for teachers is Friday, May. 29.

A few schools have experienced water damage and flooding as a result of the storm. District crews are working diligently to ensure the campuses are cleaned, repaired and ready to open for class on Wednesday. If that changes, parents will be notified immediately. As of Tuesday afternoon, Liberty High School is the only campus that will be closed Wednesday due to storm damage.
