The 2015 winners of the African American National Spelling Bee Championships visited the Texas State Capitol on May 12, 2015, to be honored for their accomplishments. Two of the three champion spellers were HISD students.

Brooke Demars of Frank Black Middle School took first place, while Jannah Collins, also from Black, won second place. Third place went to Zion Wren of WALIPP-TSU Preparatory Academy. The students met Representative Gary Elkins and other state legislators.

The spelling bee took place in February at Houston Community College.

The African American National Spelling Bee is a nonprofit organization created to encourage literacy among African American middle school students.
