The Houston Independent School District joined Mi Familia Vota and Univision 45 this week at Wheatley High School to kick off district wide student voter registration efforts.

Wheatley is just one of several locations hosting student voter registration drives in conjunction with National Voter Registration Day, which was Tuesday. Seven additional HISD high schools will host similar drives over the next two weeks as they work to register eligible students.

HISD has more than 7,600 high school students who are 18 or older.

“It’s important we encourage students to register to vote when they turn 18. Voting gives them an opportunity to let their voices be heard,” said Wheatley High School Principal Shirley Ann Rose.

Volunteers will be at a different school each day until the effort concludes on Monday, Oct. 5. Students must complete and submit the proper registration forms by Oct. 5 to be eligible to vote on Nov. 3.

Representatives from Mi Familia Vota, a non-profit organization promoting civic participation, will be at each school to assist students with the voter registration process, confirm their eligibility, and offer information sessions on the importance of fulfilling this civic duty.

Univision 45 is helping promote the voter registration drives and featured the kickoff event in their evening newscasts.
