Critical thinking is a key part of HISD’s Global Graduate profile. That’s why students from 59 HISD schools are taking part in a worldwide challenge that introduces computational thinking through online challenges.

The Bebras Computing Challenge is open to 5th- through 12th-grade students from Nov. 9-21. The goal is to get kids excited about computing and improve their problem-solving skills. The challenge comes just a few weeks before Computer Science Education Week (December 7-13) and the worldwide Hour of Code.

“It helps my students problem solve,” said Forest Brook Middle School math teacher James Wigfall. “(It’s) a task that they’re definitely going to need, a life skill that they’ll need for the rest of their lives.”

HISD is the number one participant nationwide in the Bebras Challenge, with 6,880 students participating this year.

“If I could take it again, I would take it again – because it’s fun!” said Forest Brook student Starr Phipps, who took the 45-minute challenge with her classmates.

Students will receive the results of their submissions on November 23.
