Fourth-grade teacher Alvaro Camaripano couldn’t help but have tears flowing down his face when he was surprised by Interim Superintendent Grenita Lathan on Tuesday as the Sterling McCall VIP Services Teacher of the Month for January.
A 17-year veteran teacher at Barrick Elementary School, Camaripano was recognized for his track record of high math performance scores that have also gotten him distinguished as one of the top 5 percent math teachers in the district.
“Mr. Camaripano is well-deserving in receiving this honor,” said Principal Yolanda Garrido. “He is a humble, loving, and dedicated teacher that works hard daily to ensure all students achieve academic success.”
It’ll be a family affair for the next 30 days when Camaripano arrives at school in his fully loaded 2019 GMC Acadia, courtesy of Sterling McCall Buick.
Joining his morning commute, will be his wife, who is a first-grade teacher that has served 12 years at Barrick Elementary, as well as the couple’s daughter, who is a student at the campus.
Camaripano is a favorite amongst leadership and his colleagues, which is why he was recently asked to become a lead teacher for the North area. He is known in making himself readily available to support campus teachers through model lessons, curriculum planning, observations, and feedback.
“Because I’m a second language learner, I teach students how I would like to be taught when learning the language of my subject,” Camaripano said. “I really can’t tell you how much this means to me, and I’m extremely appreciative.”
As part of the Teacher of the Month program, HISD Interim Superintendent Grenita Lathan and a rep from Sterling McCall VIP Services surprise a teacher each month. The teacher is presented with an award, a gift basket of promotional items, a $150 gift card, and a luxury loaner vehicle.
Each of the seven HISD Area Superintendents are responsible for selecting a teacher from their region to be honored from October 2018 to May 2019. Principals who would like to nominate a teacher on their campus should contact their school support officer or area superintendent directly.
