HISD community partner Imagine learning hosted a celebration ceremony at The Rice School to recognize the top donating classroom and student for their Do Math Pay It Forward contest.
With a combined total of 455,000 math points, The Rice School raised the most money in the district.
“It feels really good because I know I’m making a big difference in the world,” said sixth-grader Mira Moore, top donating student at The Rice School.
This past October, HISD students completed more than 228,000 math problems and gave away more than five million points earned from the program to donate $1,000 to the Houston Food Bank.
The Imagine Math program allows students to earn points by completing personalized math problems designed to provide educators measurable data in real time.
Students are then able to use their points to update profile avatars or donate to charity.
“It feels so exciting,” said Houston Food Bank Backpack Buddy Coordinator Andrea Villegas. “It really shows that HISD students really care about helping the community which motivates me to continue providing food bags for children in our community.”
Imagine Learning Customer Engagement Manager Lisa Wise was also excited to celebrate with The Rice School students and share the importance of giving back to their community.
“We know that students don’t have checking accounts or credit cards,” said Wise. “But they have the willingness, and they want to help their community around them. We are the vehicle that allows students to strengthen their math skills but also donate and give back.”
