Houston Independent School District (HISD) and the Houston Health Department (HHD) teamed up to administer 3,982 vaccines to 991 students at four clinics held on the first and second Saturdays in November. State law requires that students be vaccinated or have a waiver on file by the end of this month. 

“HISD wants our students to be healthy and in school learning every day – and we are pleased that so many families came out to get their child vaccinated at our Saturday clinics,” said Executive Director of Student Supports Uyen Tieu. “We hope these clinics made it easier for families to take care of this important task, and are grateful to our HISD nurses and partners at the Houston Health Department for their work to support our students.” 

HISD scheduled the Saturday clinics after hearing from families that, because of their work obligations, it can be difficult to step away for appointments during the week. To assist families and ensure students have their required vaccines, HISD nurses and medical professionals from HHD provided free, on-site immunizations at Chavez High School and Waltrip High School on November 4, and at Sharpstown High School and Fondren Middle School on November 11. As part of the effort, HISD established bus hubs for families who needed transportation to and from the immunization sites.
