Dana Darden has been the proud principal of Benbrook Elementary School for an incredible 18 years and is this week’s HISD Star Educator.

Darden has seen a lot of growth from the once underperforming campus in her nearly two decades at the helm. But at the start of the transformation, she realized there was room for improvement when it came to high-quality teaching.

She and her teachers have worked hard over the last year to raise the quality of instruction for students every day. Hear more about how she’s holding herself accountable for the success of her students and staff in the video below.

Goals for your students and staff this school year: This school year, we will set high expectations for all students and staff to achieve meaningful progress. Our shared goal is for each student to make at least one year’s academic growth, demonstrating increased knowledge, skills, and confidence. To achieve this, we will foster a culture of continuous improvement where:

• Students are encouraged to embrace challenges, ask for help when needed, and take ownership of their learning. They will be provided with tailored support to meet their individual needs and encouraged to set personal growth goals.
• Staff will engage in professional development, collaborate with colleagues, and use data to inform instruction, ensuring that every student receives the best possible opportunity to grow academically and personally.

Together, we will create an environment where excellence is the standard, and every member of our community is empowered to thrive.

What are you looking forward to the most this holiday season? This holiday season, I’m most looking forward to spending quality time with loved ones, whether it’s gathering around the table, sharing stories, or simply enjoying each other’s company. There’s something special about the joy that comes from connecting with those we care about, and I’m excited to create new memories together. Of course, the quiet moments of reflection, cozy winter vibes, and the sense of warmth and gratitude are also things I truly cherish during this time.
