Houston ISD is hosting United States Services Academies/ROTC Information Night at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center (4400 W. 18th, 77092) from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wed., Sept. 25.
Students, parents, counselors and teachers will learn about the country’s five service academies as well as the college ROTC programs at Prairie View A&M University, Rice University, Sam Houston State University, Stephen F. Austin University, Texas A&M University, Texas State University, the University of Houston, and the University of Texas at Austin and at San Antonio.
Students seeking admission to West Point, Naval Academy or Air Force Academy must earn a Congressional nomination. Representatives from U. S. Congressional offices representing the greater HISD area will be available to discuss Service Academy nominations through their respective offices.
According to retired Army Lt. Col. Cornell McGhee, the director of HISD’s JROTC, more than 85 percent of students who participate in the programs for four years go on to college, while 10 percent enter the workforce and 5 percent go straight into the military.
