Former HISD educator Jean Davis Myers passed away on May 24, 2015. Myers, who was born in 1927, retired after 34 years with the Houston Independent School District, serving as a classroom teacher, counselor, assistant principal, and executive director of community relations and volunteer services.

HISD recognizes 2015’s top volunteers for their ‘Work of Heart’
In a (literally) heart-filled ceremony on Thursday, May 14, HISD honored the district’s top volunteers from the longstanding Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) program. VIPS, which was first launched in 1970, now has more than 30,000 volunteers districtwide who have dedicated countless hours to schools, programs, and events across Houston.

The Houston Independent School District is recognizing the efforts of thousands of volunteers and awarding the top volunteers of the year at the upcoming VIPS Recognition and Awards Program on May 22, 2013.
The Volunteers in Public Schools Program (VIPS) started in 1970 and to date, HISD has more than 30,000 volunteers district-wide who have dedicated countless hours to schools, programs and events across Houston.
During the VIPS Recognition and Awards Program, HISD will be giving numerous awards including the Jean Davis Meyer and Special Lifetime Achievement awards recognizing the most outstanding volunteers.

HISD Honors Parents at Parental Involvement Day Celebration
The Houston Independent School District will honor parents during its Parental Involvement Day Celebration on Friday, November 16. The celebration will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Delmar-Tusa Athletic complex (2020 Mangum).
The annual event will recognize parents for the role they play in supporting their children’s educational and personal growth. It will also offer parents innovative strategies they can use to help their children learn.

HISD Honors Exceptional Volunteers for 2011-2012 School Year
The Houston Independent School District held its Volunteers in Public Schools breakfast and awards ceremony at the Kingdom Builders’ Center on May 30. The annual event honors exceptional volunteer contributions by individuals and organizations and was sponsored by the HISD Foundation and Randalls.
The Jean Davis Myers award, which is the highest honor, was presented to Urban Harvest and Pilar Hernandez, an Urban Harvest parent volunteer at Kolter Elementary. The organization was recognized for its volunteer work in improving the quality of education in greater Houston. The organization’s district-wide outdoor learning environment initiative helps teachers create curriculum for outdoor classrooms. The program also provides students hands-on learning in science, math, history, and other subjects.
A Special Lifetime Achievement award was presented to George W. Black for his service to HISD’s Volunteers in Public Schools for more than 25 years. Mr. Black, a retired Marine, oversees the student safety patrol and is a member of the Safety and Security Committee at Barrick Elementary.

Board Trustee Anna Eastman and Superintendent Terry Grier presented the awards. Dr. Grier said he would challenge anyone to find a more dedicated group of individuals than the honorees and thanked them for their service to the children and schools. “You represent the best of the best: those who contribute their time and energy to Houston’s children every day, without any thought of recompense,” said Grier.
Members of HISD’s VIPS program serve as tutors, mentors, teacher partners, speakers, security patrols, chaperones, interpreters, and cafeteria monitors and help in libraries, media centers, clinics, and offices. HISD Celebrates Academic Excellence and Outstanding Achievements for the 2011-2012 School Year
Beginning this week there will be several recognition events held for Houston Independent School District students, faculty, and staff honoring exceptional academic achievements and contributions during the 2011-2012 school year.
- Tuesday, May 22nd: 2012 Scholars Banquet will be held at 7 p.m. at the Westin Oaks Galleria (5011 Westheimer). The event will honor the Class of 2012 valedictorians and salutatorians. Gary Tuma, President and CEO of Smart Financial Credit Union, will be the keynote speaker. Since its inception 78 years ago, Smart Financial Credit Union has been a valued community partner of HISD offering scholarships for graduating seniors.
- Thursday, May 24th: Team HISD Celebration of Excellence will be held at 7 p.m. at the Hilton Americas Hotel (1600 Lamar Street). At the event the 2012 Teachers of the Year will be named. The Principals of the Year and each Employee of the Month will also be recognized. This is the first time all of the honorees will be recognized during one celebration.
- Wednesday, May 30th: Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) Recognition Breakfast will be held at 8 a.m. at Kingdom Builders’ Center (6011 West Orem). This celebration will recognize parents, students, and community partners that volunteer their time at HISD schools.
HISD Superintendent Dr. Terry Grier will also be making remarks at all of the events.
