District seeking bids for 14 categories related to school construction 

HISD is looking for firms that specialize in everything from construction materials testing and traffic engineering to surveying to take part in the 2012 bond that will build or renovate 40 schools across the district.

The district has opened the solicitation process for professional services consulting in 14 areas related to school construction. The bid is available for download here on the district’s website and includes such categories as geotechnical services, environmental services, HVAC systems, hazardous materials consulting, cost estimating, code consultants, accessibility consultants, air-quality testing and monitoring, roofing inspections and enhanced commissioning.

“This is a great opportunity for a wide range of companies to do business with the district under the 2012 bond program,” said Chris Gross, general manager of the Procurement Department.  “Our goal is to find firms that will deliver high-quality services as we build these schools and to ensure our taxpayers get the best value.”

The bid is one of the latest released by the district as it moves forward with its $1.89 billion building program. District officials are currently reviewing the qualifications submitted by 86 architectural and engineering firms seeking to design the new schools.

The bond program is expected to generate thousands of jobs related to the planning and construction of the 40 schools.

Firms interested in submitting qualifications for professional services consulting should attend a pre-submittal conference on Feb. 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Delmar Stadium, located at 2020 Mangum Road, in Houston. All proposals are due on Feb. 19 by 2 p.m.

In evaluating proposals, the district looks at a firm’s relevant experience, qualifications, and its plan to include participation by minority and women-owned business enterprises.

The district hopes to have approved contracts in place by mid-March.
