Event to help students apply for college, financial aid
The Houston Independent School District College Readiness and Multilingual Department will host its second Dream Summit to assist students with the college application and financial aid process on Saturday, Dec. 10.
The event aims to help HISD DREAMers, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients, visa holders, permanent residents, refugees, and asylum grantees along with their families. Students will have the opportunity to speak with district representatives who will help them learn more about financial aid requirements and guidance with the application process. Admissions representatives from several community colleges and Texas universities will be on hand to answer questions and will host information sessions on the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA).
“This is an incredible opportunity for our students to learn more about colleges and to remain motivated in their pursuit of success,” said HISD Superintendent Richard Carranza. “This summit provides students with the answers they need to move forward in the college application process.”
The summit will also include college information sessions, a college and resource fair, and a financial aid application lab for seniors. During the resource fair, students will have an opportunity to fill out a free affidavit that states he/she has been a Texas resident for three years, which is an admissions requirement for students.
Hundreds of high school students and their families are encouraged to attend the free event, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 10 at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, 4400 W. 18th Street. Lunch will be provided. Students can contact their campus college access coordinator, counselor or college success advisor regarding transportation.
